Workplace ESOL Project

The Workplace ESOL Project provides ESOL courses at the premises of businesses and organisations across Glasgow. The project delivers work-based ESOL courses, targeting organisations and companies with workers who do not speak English as a first language and for whom this is a barrier to using their skills to the full.
The Workplace ESOL Project is funded until March 2011 by the Scottish Government RRRI fund.
Workplace ESOL Courses can:

  • Strengthen communication skills
  • Improve productivity and efficiency of your company
  • Improve quality through reduced errors
  • Improve your health and safety record
  • Increase employee willingness and ability to learn
  • Build confidence
  • Improve staff loyalty and flexibility

The Workplace ESOL Project in practice

  • Workplace ESOL courses are available to any organisation/ company in the Glasgow Area which employs non-native English speakers
  • Courses are tailor-made to address the specific needs of the company and learners. Individual interviews are conducted to negotiate course content
  • Classes are free of charge and generally take place on company premises during working hours. Times and dates of classes are flexible depending on individual schedules
  • Class size is generally quite small with between 5 and 12 learners per group, this allows us to personalise classes

Following the first two years of the Workplace ESOL Project we have secured funding from the Scottish Government Race Religion and Refugee Integration Fund. This funding will allow us to take forward this work until March 2011.
Since the launch of the project in August 2006 we have successfully delivered over thirty courses at companies and organisations across Glasgow. Vocational areas have included hospitality, construction, healthcare, transport and distribution.
Over the next funding period we hope to build on the experience we have gained and to work towards accreditation for these courses. The Workplace ESOL Project has now expanded and relocated to a new office space across the corridor from the Volunteer Tutor Project and this will be used as additional work and meeting space for tutors.
