The Volunteer Tutor Project

Volunteer Tutor Project Update

Please note that our waiting lists for volunteers and referrals are currently at full capacity and we hope to take on new volunteers and referrals once we have secured further funding.

We will update this website as soon as we know more about the outcomes of our funding bids for the Volunteer Tutor Project.

Research carried out by the Glasgow ESOL Forum identified a substantial need for voluntary tutoring within the Glasgow area. There is an enormous demand for help with English language in many capacities.
Volunteers are vital in helping warmly welcome and integrate refugees and asylum seekers into their new society. They can also help their students proceed into further education and/or work or voluntary work depending on their circumstances. In addition, they can help students, who, for whatever reason, are unable to attend regular classes.
ESOL tutoring is immensely rewarding ¨C many tutors say they take great pleasure in seeing their students progress and seeing how much this means to the students themselves.
If you would like to become a volunteer tutor we provide training and support for Volunteer Tutors for those already qualified and those new to ESOL. We run two courses; the Fastrack (two evenings over two weeks) and the Long Course (eight evenings over eight weeks).
We also help volunteers find suitable placements, deliver regular social and training workshops, run a resource library, and employ a designated Development Officer and Project Assistant. If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer Tutor please contact the Development Officer/Project Administrator by phone or email, or download information and application forms from this website.

REFERRALS

If you are an organisation which provides assistance to asylum seekers and refugees such as ESOL classes, drop-in sessions or any other community and volunteer based activities for asylum seekers and refugees, we may be able to provide a Volunteer Tutor to assist. Volunteers can support English language classes as well as informal English practice sessions, or assist asylum seekers and refugees who cannot attend regular classes, or who need additional support, with one-to-one tuition. To request a volunteer or to a refer a client please contact the Development Officer/Project Assistant on 0141 333 1196 or email info@glasgowesol.org

INTERPRETERS/ TRANSLATORS

We also welcome volunteers to help with occasional translations into languages widely spoken among the Glaswegian refugee population. Please contact the Volunteer Tutor Project if you would like to help in this capacity.
